SUPREMELY SOUTHERN FACT -- When Columbia University awarded Felton Grandison Clark his Ph.D. in 1933, he became the first black to specialize in college administration for the doctorate.

The Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs is the general deputy of the President in the management of the Southern University System and serves as the chief academic officer and chief student affairs officer for the System.

As the chief academic officer for the System, the Vice President works in consultation with the five Chancellors and their executive teams to develop, implement and monitor the production and transfer of knowledge at the member institutions.

In the role of chief student affairs officer, the Vice President works with the campuses to create learning environments that support Chickering and Gamson’s seven principles of good practice in education: (1) student-faculty contact, (2) cooperation among students, (3) active learning, (4) prompt feedback, (5) time on task, (6) high expectations, and (7) respect for diverse talents and ways of learning.

As a member of the faculty, the Vice-President is an active scholar engaged in independent research that contributes to the body of knowledge about issues of relevance to the Southern University family, state of Louisiana and the global community.
