Team garners cover story in prestigious journal 'Science'

Jim Matthews, professor of physics at Southern University, Baton Rouge and professor of physics and astronomy at LSU, partnered with scientists from 17 countries to help the Auger Observatory in Argentina take a historic step toward understanding high energy cosmic rays and their connection to violent black holes. The effort was the subject of the November 9 cover story in the journal Science

LONI Institute announces 12 positions at member sites

The LONI Institute, a bold, new, $15 million inter-university collaborative in computational sciences, materials and biology, announces the creation of 12 new faculty positions distributed across its six member universities. Louisiana State University, Southern University, Louisiana Tech University, Tulane University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of New Orleans will hire two new faculty at each university, with searches commencing during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Southern researcher's included in violence prevention book

Research by Mary E. Joseph, with the Southern University Family Life Center, has been published in the national publication, "Diverse Approaches to Family and Community Violence Prevention: A National Perspective." The publication provides strategies designed to empower students and their families who are at-risk for violence.

Kellogg makes contribution to Southern University System

Kellogg's Corporate Citizenship Fund contributed $25,000 recently to the Southern University System. The contribution is earmarked for scholarships.

Slaughter lecture opens MLK exhibit at WBR museum

A special photographic exhibit is being featured at the West Baton Rouge Museum, 845 N. Jefferson Ave. in Port Allen. The exhibit, Martin Luther King Jr. Remembered: Photographs by Flip Schulke, opened January 6 with a reception and lecture by Southern University System President Ralph Slaughter and a showing of the Schulke interview. The exhibit will continue through March 30.

Perry elected to SACS Commission on Colleges

Emma Bradford Perry, professor and dean of libraries, Southern University, Baton Rouge was recently elected to the Commission on Colleges for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, (SACS). In the 95-year history of the Commission on Colleges, she is the first librarian to serve as a commissioner. There are 77 commissioners - mostly college and university presidents/chancellors - representing 800 institutions in the Southeastern part of the United States.

Stadium expansion project set to begin

The Southern University System Foundation will contract with Lafayette-based The Lemoine Company so that construction mobilization can begin in February. The expansion will add 2,500 seats to the 26,500-seat stadium.

Local law firms establish endowed scholarship

Representatives from three local law firms recently established a $100,000 endowed scholarship at the Southern University Law Center. The Brady, Baudin, McKernan and Pendley Endowed Scholarship will be earmarked for students interested in careers in civil rights and public interest law.

The United States Department of Agriculture/Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service (USDA/CSREES) established a new Partnership Awards Program as part of its 2007 Annual Day of Appreciation. The CSREES Partnership Awards recognized excellence in Mission Integration, Multi-state Efforts, Innovative Program Models, and Effective and Efficient Use of Resources.

Southern University, Baton Rouge celebrated the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a candlelight vigil and program on Monday, Jan. 21 and hosted students from LSU and Baton Rouge Community College for a "Unity Celebration" on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

 

SUNO receives approval to construct Information Technology center

The Louisiana Board of Regents voted in early December to approve construction of an Information Technology center at Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO).

 

New dental hygiene clinic starts with open house

The SUSLA Dental Hygiene Program held an open house in December to celebrate the program's new dental clinic. The clinic will include 10 complete work stations, with computers for chair side viewing of x-rays, a florida probe charting system, digital panoramic radiographic x-ray machines, intra oral camera, operator stools and much more.

 

New MBA program graduates first class

Southern University, Baton Rouge Fall 2007 commencement included the first graduates of the master's of business administration program. Sixteen students were a part of history and are now Southern MBAs.

 

Tom Joyner Foundation sets 'Full Ride Scholarship'

The Tom Joyner Foundation, established in 1998, supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. All funds donated to the Foundation have been used for scholarship aid to students of need and to ensure sustainability of the institutions.

Walk-in Your Shoes' drive draws college, school-aged participants Southern University at Shreveport's Service Learning Program along with The Achievement Academy (Caddo Parish Schools) sponsored a community wide Shoe Drive. Donated shoes were cleaned, boxed and distributed to local shelter care programs at Providence House, Caddo Community Action, and the Salvation Army.

Southern University football fans will have to wait a year for Delon Mallory to play, but he says it will be worth the wait. Mallory, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound quarterback from John F. Kennedy High in Cleveland, recently became the first commitment for Southern's recruiting class.

Bagayoko, academy among Banneker Award recipients

Southern University Distinguished Professor of Physics and Director of the Timbuktu Academy Diola Bagayoko is one of five recipients of the 2007 Benjamin Banneker Legacy Award. The award was presented by comedian, actor, author and philanthropist Bill Cosby at the 2nd Annual Legacy Awards Gala held Nov. 7 at the J. W. Marriott in Washington, D. C. Cosby also served as the keynote speaker for the event.

SUNO student wins Tom Joyner Scholarship

SUNO student Rayon Golding, a junior biology major from Montego Bay, Jamaica, has received a $2,500 "Brothers on the Move Scholarship" from The Tom Joyner Foundation. The announcement happened Thursday on the nationally syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show." The show airs locally on 98.5 WYLD from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.

SU alum, chemist among mentors honored by White House

At a White House ceremony earlier this month, Saundra Y. McGuire, associate dean for University College at Louisiana State University, director of LSU's Center for Academic Success, and an adjunct chemistry professor, was honored for earning a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics & Engineering Mentoring. McGuire was the sole chemist among 10 individuals who won the awards. The Ecological Society of America also earned one of the awards.

Dolores Spikes, former system president of Southern University was honored in mid-January at the Old State Capitol. Spikes is a nominee for the Capital Area Leadership Hall of Fame.

Thomas D. Eatmon Jr., a Southern University public policy and urban affairs doctoral student, has been awarded the 2008 K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU).

Plans set for 65th annual livestock and poultry show

The 65th Annual Southern University State Livestock and Poultry Show will be held February 28 through March 1 at the Ag Center’s Maurice a. Edmond Livestock Arena. “The Livestock Show is a time-honored tradition that carries a legacy of providing an opportunity for youth to exhibit their prize livestock and develop responsibility and leadership skills,” said Renita Marshall, livestock show director.

Black History Month activities and events slated at SUNO

Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) has set a schedule of Black History Month events that will start on Monday, February 4 on the Lake Campus at 6801 Press Drive. The month will consist of a month-long photography display, visits from a literary legend, a film series, and a reception in New Orleans East.

SUNO continues collaboration with King commemorative art exhibition

Southern University, New Orleans' (SUNO) Museum Studies Program and Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) will present the New Orleans Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Art Exhibit from January 21 through March 29 at the New Orleans African American Museum of Art, Culture and History (NOAAM) at 1418 Governor Nicholls Street.

 

Pre-Law Day Planned for February 15

The Law Center will open its doors to prospective students and their parents and school counselors for the 15th Annual Pre-Law Day set for Friday, February 15, 2008.
