New SUBR chancellor to graduates: this is just beginning

Kofi Lomotey, the new chancellor of Southern University, Baton Rouge gave the commencement speech during the summer commencement on Friday, July 25 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Lomotey told the 269 graduates, “This is not an end, but a beginning,” he told the graduates. “That is why they call these ceremonies commencement exercises.”

New Southern program recruits, guides male students

The J.K. Haynes Teaching Fellows Program, that seeks to address the under-representation of African-American males in the teaching profession, was announced during the fifth annual J.K. Haynes Teacher Preparation Conference in July.

Entergy establishes endowment, makes donation

Entergy donated $60,000 toward establishing an endowed professorship in the College of Engineering at Southern University, Baton Rouge. E. Renae Conley, president and CEO, Entergy Louisiana and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C, presented the gift to SU System President Ralph Slaughter during the Entergy Economic Development Summit Luncheon hosted by the Southern University System.

Two new members of the SU System Board of Supervisors recently appointed by Gov. Bobby Jindal -- Patrick Bell of Thibodaux and Patrick Magee of Lafayette – were sworn in during a special meeting in late July.

The Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) Police Department held a National Night Out celebration and cook-out August 5, 2008 in Pontchartrain Park at the corner of Press Drive and Prentiss Avenue. The event was co-sponsored by the Pontilly Neighborhood Association and the Pontchartrain Park Neighborhood Association.

Freshman discover library during open house journey

Incoming freshman at Southern University, Baton Rouge were invited to “Discover a Whole New World @ John B. Cade Library,” at the second annual open house held on August 14. The day-long event exposed students to several cultural performances which included a modern dance ensemble, a Capoiera (martial arts dance) demonstration, salsa dancers and a New Orleans- style brass band. Freshmen members of the marching band also performed.

Law Center among Fabric of America Fund recipients

Daniel and Patricia Douglas, Southern University graduates, recently made a donation to the Law Center’s general scholarship fund through the Beyond Petroleum (BP) Fabric of America Fund. Last year, BP unveiled the Fabric of America Fund, which allows BP America employees to request a company donation of up to $500 for worthy causes.

The Southern University Mass Communications Department has been granted reaccreditation for an additional four years, through the 2011-2012 school year by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

Southern listed in HBCU 'top tier' by U.S. News

Southern University broke into the top tier of “America’s Best Black Colleges” in the second year of U.S. News & World Report's scoring of historically black colleges and universities. LSU was also noted in the annual listing. Southern Chancellor Kofi Lomotey said he is “extremely pleased” to move in to the top tier of black colleges after being in the second grouping last year.

SU grad student attends Democratic National Convention

Southern University graduate student Ashley Scott was one of the youngest delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on August 25-28. Scott was chosen to be an at-large delegate for U.S. Sen. Barack Obama at a May Democratic Party gathering held in Baton Rouge.

SU's Polite Stewart Jr. is featured in the September 2008 issue of Ebony magazine. Fourteen-year-old Stewart is the youngest student to enroll at Southern University, Baton Rouge. He started his studies at Southern this summer after completing home-school and making impressive scores on the ACT and SAT exams.
