Doze Y. Butler, assistant dean, family and consumer sciences, was recently selected as president of the Louisiana Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (LAFCS).

“It’s an honor to serve as president this year, because we have just had our kickoff for the centennial celebration of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences,” Butler said.

The LAFSC is an organization of professionals, who have earned degrees in the area of family and consumer sciences, and university students who are pursing degrees in the same area. Some of Butler’s duties as president will be to preside over the LAFCS state meetings, and to represent her organization at national association functions.

The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences will begin its centennial celebration on October6.

“I believe you should make a contribution to your profession by being a part of whatever association that is in your particular area,” Butler said.

“It benefits the organization, but it always benefits the students.”

Butler became a professor at Southern in 2001. Before coming to Southern she was a professor at Texas A&M University in Kingsville for 10 years.
