SU’s Mass Communications Department reaccredited

The Southern University Mass Communications Department has been granted reaccreditation for an additional four years, through the 2011-2012 school year by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

“This means that we maintain our sterling accreditation record at 96.3 percent of our accreditable programs,” said Johnny Tolliver, Southern’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Tolliver and Southern’s Mass Communications Department Chair, Mahmoud Braima, recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to receive the findings during a meeting with the accreditation council.

New equipment in the form of computer labs, radio and television studios, as well as adding faculty were some of the factors that helped the department get reaccredited, Tolliver said.

There are 162 students enrolled in Southern’s Mass Communications Department’s undergraduate program, and 40 students in the graduate program.

“Getting reaccreditation symbolizes quality,” said Braima. “It means that we are meeting the standards of quality that are set for educating students in journalism and mass communications throughout the country. It means that our curriculum is highly qualified and covers the realm of the knowledge that is available in the field.” .
