New SUBR chancellor to summer graduates: this is just the beginning

Kofi Lomotey, the new chancellor of Southern University, Baton Rouge gave the commencement speech during the summer commencement on Friday, July 25 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Lomotey told the 269 graduates, “This is not an end, but a beginning,” he told the graduates. “That is why they call these ceremonies commencement exercises.”
Lomotey urged the graduates to “play your part in addressing the injustices in our world.”
Every day, people are still discriminated against for their race, religion, sex, income, size and beauty, Lomotey said.
Southern’s summer graduates were led by Chief Student Marshal Timothy Dawson, who had the highest grade-point average. The Baton Rouge native and finance major is the second consecutive chief marshal to have graduated from Baton Rouge Magnet High School.
