Southern
University held its summer 2007 commencement ceremony
Friday at the Felton G. Clark Activity Center on the
Baton Rouge campus. Rising to the top of the 300 graduates
was Brandi Deggins of Baton Rouge. She now has a degree
in biology and is in the process of applying to medical
school. |

SUBR recently unveiled a new all-male residence hall; the first of its kind in about 40 years. The $13 million structure features four new apartment-style dorms. It willl be occupied with a mix of freshmen and upperclassmen when fall classes begin.

Recent Southern University graduate Cedric Wright did not have his Naval Commission concurred during Southern Baton Rouge Spring Commencement. Instead, he was among a special group of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) midshipmen and cadets to participate in the first presidential ROTC Commissioning Ceremony. |

The
Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS)
at Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) was recently
awarded a $100,000 grant from The Getty Foundation
for the conservation treatment of the University’s
prized African and African-American art collection
that was damaged by floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina. |

Southern University was presented $50,000 from the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus’ presented Southern University with a $50,000 contribution to establish a public service institute designed to train current and potential public and elected officials as well as provide research on policy issues. |

Eleven Southern University Law Center
students were awarded stipends in the Chancellor's
Public Service Initiative for summer 2007. A special
orientation for the students was held Tuesday, May
22, by the Office of Career Counseling and Development.

Southern University's Compliance Officer/Senior Woman Administrator, Deborah Paul, recently graduated from the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females and was chosen to facilitate at the 2007 NCAA National Leadership Conference for Student-Athletes. Her editorial on the minority hiring issue was featured in the NCAA News July 16, 2007 issue. |

Ruth Bailey Wesley has joined the Law Center as the executive assistant to the Chancellor. Wesley, a native of Baton Rouge, came to SULC from the Department of Justice, Civil Attorney/Gaming Section, where she was assistant attorney general.

Victor Mbarika envisions local doctors serving the sick and needy in Africa
without having to leave the confines of their American offices. As the director of Southern University¹s new International Center for
Information Technology and Development, Mbarika is setting up infrastructure
in developing countries to provide greater health-care access there through
"telemedicine."

The second annual President’s Cup 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk/Run is slated for Saturday, October 27. “The President’s Cup brings a family-wellness component to the diverse activities found on the Baton Rouge campus’ fall calendar” said Melanie Rey, 1st place winner in the 25-34 age category in the first walk/run held last fall.
